My dearest Cairns- When I first arrived I felt lo My dearest Cairns- When I first arrived I felt lonely, overwhelmed, avoiding the phone calls home where people would say I was “living my best life” when in reality I wasn’t. I bounced around from hostel to hostel until I found one I could stand to live in. Then when I reached my breaking point of zero quiet, minimal alone time, and waiting 2 hours to use the kitchen after a 10 hour work day, I struggled to find a share house. I struggled to find friendships that felt like they clicked. I felt every mile between me and my closest people deep in my chest. I had a job but couldn’t get enough hours. I kept needing to remind myself that “today was the day I plant the seed not the day I eat the fruit.” Starting a life in a new country is hard!! BUT Then I became friends with my work mates and turns out we really clicked. Then a higher position opened up at my job and I got more hours. Then I found a sharehouse that wasn’t at all what I was looking for but happened to be a perfect fit. I had a 2 year old housemate that reminded me we really need to prioritize play. I’m so proud of this era. I moved somewhere I knew no one. I found a job, I opened a bank account, I filed for a tax number, I opened a superannuation. I joined a gym, I found a place to live, I made a community. Sometimes it’s so easy to see things as small or insignificant feats…all just one check off the to do list. Mainly because you’re surrounded by people doing the same thing. But when I really step back and think of it from the perspective of someone who is outside of my world, I guess it’s a pretty big deal huh? Someday when I get to the end of my life I won’t sigh and think, well what if I lived by the Great Barrier Reef and what if I worked in a surf hostel in Mexico and what if I went to Europe by myself? What if I chopped banana trees in Hawaii or what if I volunteered with turtles in Bali… I think I’ll look at all those possible lives I could have lived. And all the ones I did. You get one lifetime but you can live a lot of lives in that time. I’m so happy with all the eras I’ve lived. I can only imagine what eras are ahead of me - goodbye cairns! Now down the east coast I go🚌
88 days…’PLETED IT MATE! I laughed, I cried ( 88 days…’PLETED IT MATE! I laughed, I cried (please don’t yell at me about a milkshake), I moved 5 times, I landed a job in a tough market, & I worked 88 days (& then some) to renew my visa for a second year But I did it! And I didn’t spend one minute on a farm😎
