Fun Ways to Hang With Friends in Adulthood

Share with friends!

Look, we all know what it’s like to feel a lil stuck socially. You want to see your friends but don’t know what to do beyond just going to grab a bite or a drink to catch up. But if you’re looking to mix it up, me and my best friend Clara came up with a long list of more creative/thoughtful options. You can listen to the podcast episode but if you don’t have time for the side quest tangents or just want a quick reference, pull up this article whenever you need some inspiration.

  • Make it a regularly scheduled thing
  • Plan specifically- pick stuff out ahead of time! If you’re having a movie night, pick the movie beforehand. If you are having a game night- line up the games ahead of time.
  • Tap into your resources! Your local library probably has cool things you can borrow like projectors and tech equipment. Libraries actually do a lot more than books and it’s all free!
Check out a Brewery
  • One thing about Minnesota, every middle-aged person will decide it’s their life dream to open a brewery as a second career. You could check out a new one every weekend and probably still never run out. I love a craft brew and the vibes are usually immaculate.
Trivia
  • Lots of breweries, bars, and restaurants host trivia on weeknights. Themed trivia is extra fun.
Hikes/state parks
  • I often forget how many state parks there are all around and I definitely don’t use them enough. Find some near you and get grounded.
Making a big deal out of a small thing
  • The age old debates. Finally get down to the truth about which is better- waffles of pancakes?
Best of the brand
  • Buy every flavor of your fav snack and rank them best to worst. (ex. every Dorito bag, Olipop flavor, Cheez-it box)
Power point night
  • At this point I think we’ve all seen the themed PowerPoint nights people have with their friends on TikTok or wherever you watch your short-form video content. Each person puts together a PowerPoint and presents it to the group. Everyone’s got something they feel a spike of passion for whether it’s a joke, conspiracy theory, or topic. You can make it as silly or serious as you want.
Thrift
  • Go to a thrift and pick outfits for each other. Either something they would totally wear or never in a million years. Go out for dinner or bowling or karaoke in the fresh fits. You’re sure to have a laugh.
Clothing swap!!
  • Check out the one I hosted with Lila.

Make Your Own

Townie Bar crawl
  • Townie bars are cheap, close, and can really be a damn good time. Rally up the friend group for a DIY bar crawl around your fav spots. Add in challenges for each stop or dress up in a theme to really seal the deal.
 Wine tasting
  • So you know you like white wine but… what kind? Buy a bottle of a few different types (Riesling, Chardonnay, pinot grigio, etc.) and discover what you like best! OR buy the same type (Pinot Grigio) but from different regions. Is New Zealand better than California? Or France? Or Spain?
    • You can of course do an organized wine tour, but if you get a few friends together, this is likely to be a lot cheaper, and you get to choose what you’re drinking.
Best in Town
  • ex. Find 5 restaurants in your area to visit and rank who has the best margarita. Visit a new one each week and rank it over different categories like tartness, strongness, presentation, cost value, etc. (think 4 weddings)
    • Do this with donuts, waffle fries, mocktails, bubble tea, whatever you guys love, find the best one in town.
Scavenger hunt
  • Ever seen the movie Sleepover? If not, I can’t really help you. It’s a classic. Grow up and watch this cheesy teenage chick flick and then we can talk.
BeerLympics
  • Bonus points if you choose everyone’s walk out hype songs and make t shirts or have a costume theme
The Rotating Bartender
  • Each person makes a round of drinks according to a specific theme. Come up with catchy titles and fun concoctions. I’ve seen people do this with Music artists, TV shows, locations, etc. Just be careful. If you’ve got a lot of people, that’s a lot of drinks. Maybe toss in a few mocktails or have half the people make a drink and half make a snack.
Go to the dog park
  • Sparky gets to run free while the two of you catch up and fill your cup with the sweet energy of pups playing about
Stroll through a farmers market
  • Grocery shopping but it’s not a chore and you give back locally <3
Train for a race together
  • Keeps you accountable both in training and maintaining your friendship.
Volunteer
  • Share a soft spot for animals? Go walk dogs at the local shelter together.
Take a class
  • Dance, yoga, pottery, pole-dancing, cooking, aerial yoga, ukulele. Whatever strikes an interest
  • Use ClassPass or Masterclass
Join a recreational sports league
  • Your glory days may be behind you but your love for the sport isn’t. Join an adult league and you’ll tick off physical activity and social time
Book club
  • Rotate who hosts and picks the book. I recommend setting a recurring slot (i.e. second Tuesday of every month)

Remember the things you did as kids and forget about? We’ve listed them.

  • Good Old Fashioned sleepover
    • We’re talking matching pajama sets, snacks, early 2000s movies, mega bed in the living room, dance parties and sharing secrets.
  • Bowling
  • Mini golf
  • Trampoline park
  • Laser tag
  • Arcade
  • Karaoke
  • Build a Lego set
  • Rock climbing
  • Museums
  • Movie theater
  • Puzzle – add wine or weed (if legal in your state) to this one
  • Roller skating rink
  • Bouncy house warehouse
  • Drive in movies our town sadly got rid of it :’(
  • Escape room (didn’t do this as a kid but its on the same wavelength)
  • Wii
    • I’m talking Just Dance, I’m talking Mario Kart, I’m talking Guitar Hero
Good Ole Deck of cards
  • One thing I always like to have around is a deck of cards. Anyone can learn a card game and you don’t even have to speak the same language to play together (I’m talking to you travelers). It’s such a fun way to pass the time and there are an infinite number of games you can play with those 52 cards.
Some other fun games I recommend are:
  • catchphrase
  • Bananagrams
  • Telestrations
  • Stir The Pot
  • For the Girls
  • Slide in the DMs
  • What do you Meme
  • Bop it

Dive into the seasons! We get all 4 seasons to the extremes where I’m from. The best way to get through it is to embrace it!

  • Winter: Snow tubing, snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing, Christmas markets, light shows

  • Summer: Camping, beach volleyball, swimming, picnic, visit botanical gardens, water park, amusement park

  • Spring: go for a walk outside, hike, bike

  • Fall: Apple orchard, pumpkin patch,
Plan a trip together
  • There are 100s of places all over the US I’d love to spend a weekend exploring. I never do it though. Plan it. Book it. You’re making adult money now.
STAYCATION IN AN AIRBNB
  • Look up best things to do in your state, find an airbnb close to home, and do a little getaway.
Events
  • Festivals, concerts, podcast live shows, author events, the possibilities are endless.
  • Lots of your favorite smaller music venues have amateur bands playing. Pick a day and blindly check it out. Who knows, you might just find your new favorite artist and you can say you knew them when they were just getting started. Plus, it really means a lot to them to have people show up.

So there you have it. A TON of ideas for ways to see your friends in adulthood. Now you really have no excuse to say “idk what to do”

If you liked the article, check out the episode!
