On Closure After a Breakup
If you never got closure from a heartbreak, here it is:
I met up with my ex the other day.
He was my first love, and my first heartbreak.
We held on desperately to save a relationship that had run its course.
Grasping at straws. Learning that love wasn’t enough.
It shattered me.
5 years later we sat across from each other. Able to talk about life, our love, and… our breakup.
We talked about how our split was painful. We seemed to equally agree how agonizing it was.
In hearing him say this, I felt relief.
All that time I thought I was miserable while he was doing just fine,
I
Was
Wrong.
If you don’t get the chance to have this kind of closure after your first heartbreak,
I want you to know
If there was once love there, it will always be painful to lose it.
And just because it hurt, doesn’t mean it was the wrong choice.
5 years later I could see it was the best thing for us. We both grew into ourselves, creating lives that aligned with our biggest dreams. Which we never could have done, together.
Now that all that anger is gone, all I feel is love.
But it’s different now. It’s an appreciation for what we had and how it built the stepping stones for where we are today. Not for wanting it back.
To my first love, I’m thankful for all the stuff we did, And now, 5 years later, I can be thankful for all the stuff we didn’t.
